Sound isn't just one thing! It's not
only the engineering inside the audio file, it's not only the
engineering of player capability, and it's not only the engineering
in speaker miniaturization... it's the creative innovation, integration,
and optimization, the engineering of everything focused on a
singular destination: a model railroad layout scene! form conceptual,
to ears.
In 2005 Fantasonics Engineering started
the online 'Layout Sound' group, 800 members from all over the
world. That's where we stumbled into Bob Scheffler with PRICOM
Design, Jt Burke with with Scale
Sound Systems, the amazing Professor KLYZLR. All three essentially
became Instant Enginears. Before that nobody ever tried in earnest
to create a miniature sound system... why would they?!?. Who,
other than model railroaders, would be crazy enough to try to
build a serious scale model audio system?
The Hobby needed one.
A few years ago we created a private
group, 'the layout sound think tank'. We invited the best minds,
and set about envisioning and then engineering the future of
model railroad layout sound for the 21st century.
Applications Enginears' Specification: A dedicated, integrated. R-T-R, miniature
layout sound system that is idiot proof, ridiculously easy to
install, and one that can reproduce Scale Magic
Sound faithfully!
We approached that seriously...
- Dedicated- everything optimized for one application
- Integrated- every stage of the signal path
simplified to work together
- R-T-R because model railroaders want to have
fun ASAP
- Idiot proof- (not an insult!:) it has to
just work without a lot of work, new skills, or a steep learning
curve
- Ridiculously easy to install- no one wants
to destroy their layout in order to put the speakers in the scene
where it should appear
- Reproduce Scale Magic Sound faithfully-
well... duh!

While the sound design and player
features had evolved and integrated nicely over the years, the
missing link in a complete signal chain (the part you hear!:)
had too often been left up to the end user... almost any speakers
can reproduce sound quietly. We wanted a scale studio/layout
'reference monitor' system. It's likely Jt. Burke knows more
about micro speakers and enclosure engineering for model railroading
than anyone else on the planet, we knew he was the Enginear of
the task immediately. The system specs required a lot more 'thinking
outside the box' than you might think, but Jt joyfully addressed
the challenge. The results are a miniature reference system Engineared
specifically for layout playback, and ridiculously easy to install
(see: below).
